‘When Rhythm Sleeps‘ is part of the ongoing series ‘Singles‘ begun in 2011 and represents the beginning of the artist’s exploration through self-portraits. The works offer a melodic snapshot in time, summoning tranquility where once was motion.
The execution is marked by the intuitive and playful exploration of organic movement, for example in the form of paint dripping down the nude canvas of the human body. The vibrant use of colour in stark contrast allows the displayed disparity between a transformed meditative state and an omnipresent space-time continuum. The subject’s reoccurring floral imagery thereby serves as an ersatz-token for the natural world, time and again merging with artificial elements.
With the artist assuming the role of make-up artist, model and photographer, the Singles foreshadows her later design and construction of elaborate sets for her works.
