A Watercoloured Summer
New Exhibition by Rinaldo Hopf
Opening Reception: Friday, July 4, 2026 | 6–9pm
There are artists whose work you admire, and there are artists whose lives become intertwined with your own. For me, Rinaldo Hopf belongs firmly in the latter category.
Rinaldo is not only one of The Ballery’s longest-standing exhibiting artists, he is also a dear friend and neighbour. Living less than 200 metres from the gallery in Schöneberg, he has been a constant presence in the story of The Ballery since we first began working together in 2014.
Over the years, our worlds have continued to weave themselves together in beautiful and unexpected ways, like watercolours finding one another on paper. We have grown alongside each other, sharing exhibitions, conversations, ideas, successes, challenges, and countless moments of artistic discovery.
As our current exhibition Schöneberg Voices comes to a close, it feels fitting that the next chapter belongs to an artist whose voice has been part of this neighbourhood, and part of The Ballery, for so long.
A Watercoloured Summer presents a remarkable selection of watercolour paintings drawn from deep within Rinaldo’s archives. While preparing this exhibition, I encountered works from the mid to late 1980s that I had never seen before. Having worked with Rinaldo for more than a decade, I believed I knew his artistic journey intimately. I was mistaken.
These paintings stopped me in my tracks.
Fresh, confident, playful, sophisticated and deeply alive, they reveal an extraordinary period in Rinaldo’s artistic development. I immediately fell in love with them and knew they deserved to be seen.
For this exhibition, I have selected what I believe are some of the finest watercolours from this period. Together they form a vibrant celebration of colour, light, observation and artistic freedom; perfect companions for the summer months in Schöneberg.
The exhibition opens on Saturday, July 4th, from 6–9pm, and Rinaldo Hopf will be present throughout the evening.
Rinaldo and I have created many exhibitions together over the years, but this one feels different.
This one elevates.
We warmly invite you to join us for an evening of art, conversation, and the opening of what promises to be a truly special summer exhibition.
