Friends for more than twenty years, Robert Mapplethorpe and Patti Smith fueled each other’s creativity until his death in 1989. The Mapplethorpe portrait used for the cover of Smith’s influential 1975 album Horses is iconic. In the mid-1970s, New York scene photographer Jody Caravaglia acquired a medium-format camera and began taking photographs of a wide circle of friends and acquaintances, including artists, composers, and socialites.
